Ali Farka Toure is a singer and guitarist from Mali. In the 1960’s, John Lee Hooker visited Bamako and introduced Ali Farka Toure to the Blues. At first he thought Hooker was playing African music but then realised that what he was playing was something different but with deep African roots. Ali Farka Toure was inspired and took on elements of Hooker’s playing in his own music.
Watch and listen to him funk it up in this video with his very official but attentive audience.
“We were in the middle of the landscape which inspired the music and that in turn inspired myself and the musicians. My music is about where I come from and our way of life and it is full of important messages for Africans. In the West perhaps this music is just entertainment and I don’t expect people to understand. But I hope some might take the time to listen and learn.” Ali Farka Toure
I first heard Ali Farka Toure in 1993 and recently rediscovered him on youtube. He's an awesome performer. Ali Farka Toure takes us on a tour of the brick hall in this video.
